Expedition Team
A diverse team of experts accompanies this expedition — seasoned naturalists, undersea specialists, and researchers — who will share their knowledge and insights with you and bring each destination to life. Listed below are some of the experts and the departure date(s) they will be joining.
Sisse Brimberg
Sisse Brimberg and Cotton Coulson, based in Denmark, are two highly experienced photographers who have also been partners in marriage for 30 years and are Contributing Editors for National Geographic Traveler magazine. Collectively they have photographed over 50 stories for National Geographic magazine and National Geographic Traveler during the past 32 years. They have spent most of their careers working in Europe shooting stories from the Arctic and Scandinavia, to Italy and France. Both Sisse and Cotton have been awarded prizes by Pictures of the Year International, the National Press Photographers Association, White House Press Photographers Association, and Communication Arts.
Peter Hillary
When Peter Hillary first climbed Mount Everest in 1990, he and his father, Sir Edmund Hillary, who made the first ascent of Mount Everest in 1953, became the first father and son to reach the summit of the world's highest mountain. Among Peter's 40 mountaineering expeditions he participated in a 2002 National Geographic-sponsored ascent and film on Mount Everest. He is the author of six books on mountaineering and does charitable work to assist the local people of the Mount Everest region in Nepal.
Jay Dickman
Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer Jay Dickman has covered events as diverse as the war in El Salvador to the Olympics for numerous publications, including National Geographic magazine. A popular photo instructor and expedition leader, he has lived in a Stone Age village in Papua New Guinea, spent a week under the Arctic ice in a nuclear attack sub, and was on a boat that sank in the Amazon. He has also published five books and numerous articles for National Geographic Traveler, Life, Condé Nast Traveler, Time, and Forbes.
Kim Heacox
Writer, photographer, and conservationist Kim Heacox has written two books for National Geographic centered on the Antarctic continent. Shackleton: The Antarctic Challenge focuses on the Endurance expedition from 1914-16 and Antarctica: The Last Continent is dedicated to exploring the coldest, windiest, highest, driest, least populated, and most remote corner of the world. A highly respected expert on Antarctica and a gifted storyteller, he spends much of his time writing about and photographing life in earth's Arctic regions.
Dan Westergren
As senior photo editor for National Geographic Traveler magazine, Dan Westergren is responsible for the magazine's photographic vision. Dan enjoys exploring cold, high places, having photographed the Arctic while on expedition with Wil Steger and the summits of Mount Kilimanjaro, Mount Blanc, and the Matterhorn for the pages of Traveler.
Jim Richardson
Photographer Jim Richardson has produced more than 40 stories for National Geographic magazine and National Geographic Traveler, where he is a contributing editor. Jim photographed two recent cover stories for National Geographic magazine: "The End of Night" in November 2008 and "The Good Earth: Soil" in September 2008. His work has also been published in Time, Newsweek, Life, and Sports Illustrated; and featured on CBS News Sunday Morning and ABC's Nightline.
