Semana Santa: Easter in Guatemala

  • Trip Type: Journeys
  • 10 Days | Round-trip Antigua
  • Group Size: Max 15

Trip Details

Experience one of Central America's most vibrant celebrations—Semana Santa, the Holy Week leading up to Easter—from our base in Antigua, Guatemala. Line the parade route decorated in flower petals, explore Chichicastenango market, and meet Mayan villagers amidst the volcanic scenery of Lake Atitlán. Be part of an exceptional time in an exceptional place.

Trip Highlights

    • Help create a carpet of flowers to decorate the Semana Santa parade route.
    • Explore the Chichicastenango Mayan market with a guide.
    • Take part in a tree-planting ceremony in the village of San Juan La Laguna.

Itinerary - 10 Days

Day 1 — Guatemala City/Antigua

Arrive at the Guatemala City airport and transfer to our hotel in Antigua.

Days 2 & 3 — Lake Atitlán

Travel by van and boat to the secluded village of Jaibalito on Lake Atitlán. Visit lakeside communities by boat, including San Juan la Laguna, a G Adventures-supported village. Take an orientation walk, visit various weaving co-ops and colorful markets, have a traditional Mayan lunch, and attend a Mayan tree-planting ceremony. With free time, opt for outdoor pursuits like fishing or kayaking. (2B, 1L)

Day 4 — Chichicastenango

Head inland to Chichicastenango and delve into the town’s famed market. Known for its colorful handicrafts and textiles, the market is an important trade center for residents and provides a glimpse into daily Maya life. Tour the stalls with a local guide before visiting nearby pilgrimage sites, including Santo Tomás church, the cemetery, and Cerro Turcaj. (1B)

Days 5 & 6 — Antigua

Return to Antigua and explore the city with a local expert on a guided cultural walking tour that includes City Hall, the Catedral de Santiago, the Palace of the Captains General, and more. Opt to go on a volcano trek, go on an excursion to a coffee farm, or take a salsa dance class. We’ll also be invited to take part in various Semana Santa preparations as the city gears up for the height of the festival. (2B)

Days 7, 8, & 9 — Semana Santa

Join in the Semana Santa celebrations in the heart of Antigua. Help decorate the parade routes, and join in on the construction of an alfombra—a vibrant carpet created from colorful sawdust and flowers. See the streets blanketed in these elaborate creations, and watch processions and floats move through the old town. Enjoy some of the many ceremonies that take place during this special time in the city. (3B)

Day 10 — Anitgua

Depart at any time (1B)
