Connect with your inner animal on a 12-day journey into the unusual
and awe-inspiring landscapes of Borneo. Experience the otherworldly
limestone cliffs of Mulu National Park and its famed bat exodus;
encounter the orangutans of Matang; set off on a river cruise in search
of elusive Bornean pygmy elephants; and discover the Lipad mud
volcano, a mineral salt lick for local wildlife.
Attend a talk at the Matang Wildlife Centre rehabilitation sanctuary, and come face to face with the center’s wild inhabitants.
Explore jungle waterways by longboat, and seek out nocturnal wildlife of the rain forest on nighttime walks and safaris.
Get a glimpse into rural Bornean life during a visit to a Bidayuh village.
Hear from a conservationist at the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre.
Itinerary - 12 Days
Day 1 — Kuching
Arrive at any time. Arrival transfer
Days 2 & 3 — Kuching
Enjoy a full-day excursion
to the Bidayuh tribal village, a thriving rural community
that is home to one of the few remaining traditional
Bidayuh longhouses in Sarawak. Explore the village
with a local guide and sit down to a traditional lunch.
Return to Kuching in the evening. The next day, visit the
Matang Wildlife Centre, a rescue center for protected
wildlife in Sarawak, including orangutans, sun bears,
and clouded leopards. Tour the center and meet
an orangutan conservationist who will explain the
importance of their work. Enjoy a break and visit a local
home in the village for a traditional lunch. Later, return
to the wildlife centre and learn more about the daily
care and rehabilitation of the orangutans. (2B, 2L)
Days 4 & 5 — Gunung Mulu National Park
Catch a flight to the UNESCO
World Heritage site of Mulu National Park, known for its
lush rain forest and impressive cave systems. Take a night
walk with our local guide to search out nocturnal wildlife.
The next day, board a longboat and travel along the
Melinau River to the Wind and Clearwater caves. Enjoy
a picnic and take a swim at Clearwater Springs. Afterward,
walk through the rain forest and explore the Lang and
Deer caves. Marvel at Lang’s stunning stalagmites and
stalactites, and be awed by Deer Cave–the largest
cave passage in the world and home to an estimated
two to three million bats. (2B, 1L)
Day 6 — Gunung Mulu National Park/Kota Kinabalu
Enjoy free time this morning before catching
a flight to Kota Kinabalu. The evening is yours to spend at leisure. (1B)
Days 7 & 8 — Bilit/Kinabatangan River
Catch an early
morning flight to Sandakan and visit the Bornean Sun
Bear Conservation Centre, where we enjoy a talk on
the bears and the conservation efforts to protect them.
Afterward, transfer by boat to our rain forest lodge
and enjoy a wildlife cruise and night walk. The next
day, enjoy wildlife excursions into the jungle on foot
and by boat with local guides and naturalists. Cruise
the Kinabatangan River in search of birds and wildlife,
keeping your eyes peeled for pygmy elephants as well
as some of Borneo’s 10 primate species, including the
proboscis monkey and orangutan. (2B, 2L, 2D)
Days 9 & 10 — Tabin Wildlife Reserve
Drive to Tabin Wildlife Reserve
and check into our rain forest lodge. Then enjoy a hike
along an elephant trail to the active Lipad mud volcano
which provides a mineral salt lick for wildlife. After
dinner, enjoy a night safari and look out for nocturnal
wildlife. The next day, take an early-morning bird walk,
searching out some of the 300 species of birds in the
area. After breakfast, take a wildlife drive.
Later, trek through the lush green rain forest known
for its rich diversity of plants and animal species to
the Lipad Waterfall. Relax and take a dip in the natural
pool and enjoy a refreshing shower under
the waterfall. This evening, take a night walk in search of
sleeping birds, frogs, and insects. (2B, 2L, 2D)
Day 11 — Lahad Datu/Kota Kinabalu
Spend the morning at leisure before
catching a flight back to Kota Kinabalu. Enjoy some
free time to explore. (1B, 1L)
Day 12 — Kota Kinabalu
at any time. (1B)
