Day 2 — Jarash/Amman
After breakfast, visit one of the best-preserved provincial cities of the Roman Empire—Jarash. Called the "Pompeii of the Middle East," Jarash is a 3rd-century city that was decimated by invasion and earthquake. Walk around this expansive site, visiting the South Theater, the columned Temple of Artemis, and the ornate Nymphaeum. Then attend a live performance of the Roman and Chariot Experience, which features a display of Roman Army drill and battle tactics, gladiators in full armor, and a chariot race. Enjoy a traditional Jordanian lunch and return to Amman, known historically as Philadelphia and Rabbath-Ammon. High above the city at the ancient Citadel, study the traces of Amman's many cultures: the regal columns of a Roman temple, the elegant capital of Byzantine church, the inventive carving of the Umayyad Palace, and the fascinating displays in the Jordan Archaeological Museum.

Day 3 — Madaba/Wadi Rum/Petra
After breakfast, travel to Madaba, where dozens of mosaic tiles from Byzantine churches have been uncovered. At the Church of St. George, examine an elaborate sixth-century mosaic map of the Holy Land. Continue to the burial sites of Moses on Mount Nebo, and then to Al Karak, a former Crusader village built and walled for defense. Continue south, stopping for a lunch along the way. Just outside of Wadi Rum, transfer to 4x4 vehicles to explore this fascinating area where T.E. Lawrence (of Arabia) lived with Bedouin friends and allies during World War I. Explore the sand dunes and rose-tinted mountains where Bedouin tribes still camp. After watching the sun set on this dramatic landscape, continue on to our hotel at Petra, located just a few steps from the entrance to the site.

Day 4 — Petra
Enjoy a full day exploring Petra today. Enter the ancient city through its only entrance, known as the Siq, a narrow chasm between naturally sculpted cliffs. This passageway could be easily defended against attack by an invading army, and ends with the glorious sight of the Treasury. Join your guide for a tour the expansive site, whose 800 monuments were rediscovered only in 1812. Then enjoy time on your own to explore the Royal Tombs or the Monastery. Travel back to Amman and enjoy dinner on your own.
