Take a tropical getaway that goes beyond the average beach vacation. On this introduction to Guatemala's cultural and natural highlights, visit the lakeside communities of Lake Atitlán, walk the well-preserved Spanish Baroque neighborhoods of Antigua, and take a cooking class on the picturesque shores of Lake Petén Itzá. Add in some trekking, zip lining, or fishing, and you have an unforgettable Central American adventure.

Trip Highlights

    • Venture into the jungle on a guided tour of the Mayan city of Tikal.
    • Cruise Lake Atitlán, and visit the lakeside village of San Juan la Laguna for a Mayan lunch and a tree-planting ceremony.
    • Join a local chef to prepare traditional Guatemalan dishes on the shores of Lake Petén Itzá.
    • Learn to make chocolate the Mayan way at the ChocoMuseo, and then sample your tasty creation.

Itinerary - 8 Days

Day 1 — Guatemala City/Antigua

Arrive in Guatemala City and transfer to our hotel in Antigua.

Day 2 — Antigua

Explore Antigua with a local historian on a guided cultural walking tour that includes City Hall, the Catedral de Santiago, the Convent of Capuchins, the Palace of the Captains General, and the museums at Paseo de los Museos. Opt to go on a volcano trek, or take an excursion to a coffee farm or macadamia nut plantation. (1B)

Days 3 & 4 — Lake Atitlán

Travel by van and boat to the secluded village of Jaibalito on Lake Atitlán. Visit lakeside communities by boat, including San Juan la Laguna, a G Adventures–supported village. Take an orientation walk, visit various weaving co-ops and colorful markets, have a traditional Mayan lunch, and attend a Mayan tree-planting ceremony. Then, with free time, opt for outdoor pursuits like zip lining, fishing, windsurfing, hiking, bird-watching, and kayaking. (2B, 1L)

Day 5 — Antigua

Return to Antigua and participate in a hands-on workshop at a chocolate museum, learning about the ancient Mayan chocolate-making process from bean to bar and enjoying plenty of tastings. (1B)

Days 6 & 7 — Flores/Tikal

Fly to the colorful town of Flores in the Petén region of Guatemala. Enjoy a cooking lesson, and have lunch with a local chef on the shores of Lake Petén Itzá. Spend your last full day in Guatemala on a guided tour of the famous Mayan ruins of Tikal, a UNESCO World Heritage site. (2B, 1L)

Day 8 — Flores

Depart at any time. (1B)

Cost Details

All trip prices are per person based on double occupancy. If you're traveling on your own, we'll pair you up with a roommate of the same gender so that you can pay the same rate as other travelers. Prices are subject to change without notice and do not include airfare. All prices and fares are quoted in U.S. dollars.
