Explore the Greater Kruger area during seven thrilling days in South Africa. Search for elephants, lions, and rhinos at one of the continent’s most celebrated national parks and at a private game reserve. Go on safari with a researcher from the Carnivore Conservation Programme, part of National Geographic's Big Cats Initiative. Witness the circle of life in action in one of the planet’s wildest places.
Arrive and transfer to the guesthouse. Enjoy a traditional braai (barbecue) welcome dinner. (1D)
Enjoy a scenic drive along the famed Panorama Route, with stops at Blyde River Canyon, Bourke’s Luck Potholes, and God’s Window. Continue to our lodge, located just outside Kruger National Park. (1B)
Embark on an incredible early morning game drive inside Kruger National Park. From an open safari vehicle, observe wildlife of all sorts—from leopards and elephants to wild dogs and impalas. In the afternoon, opt to take another game drive or go on a bushwalk with a guide. Later, enjoy a delicious South African dinner on the deck or in the boma at our lodge. (1B, 1D)
Travel to the Karongwe Private Game Reserve, and enjoy morning and evening open-vehicle safaris to seek out Africa’s "big five"—lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, and Cape buffalo. Meet with a researcher from the Endangered Wildlife Trust’s Cheetah Metapopulation Project, a project managed by National Geographic grantee Vincent van der Merwe that is part of National Geographic’s Big Cats Initiative. A member of Vincent’s team will tell us about their ongoing field research and join us on one of our game drives. (2B, 1L, 2D)
After a final game drive, head back to the city. This evening, sit down to a traditional dinner at our guesthouse. Depart at any time the following day. (2B, 1D)
