Itinerary - 9 Days
Days 1 & 2 — U.S./Istanbul, Turkey
Depart on an overnight flight to Istanbul. On arrival, check into your hotel.

Day 3 — Istanbul
Spend the day exploring this magnificent city with Aydin Kudu, one of National Geographic magazine's local experts. Venture into the sixth-century Basilica Cistern, a vast underground chamber; and visit legendary Hagia Sophia. View Islamic art and architecture at Topkapi Palace, the seat of the Ottoman sultans until the mid-19th century, and see the Suleymaniye Mosque and the Sultan Ahmed Mosque. Then stroll through the modern Pera district.

Day 4 — Istanbul
Today meet your guide and visit the Church of St. Savior in Chora, a Byzantine marvel adorned with breathtaking mosaics and frescoes. Experience the lively Grand Bazaar, an arcaded market filled with local crafts and produce, and the picturesque and aromatic spice bazaar. Stop at the gem-like Rüstem Pasha Mosque, decorated with exquisite Iznik tiles, and end the day at the Galata Tower, which offers spectacular views of the city.

Day 5 — Istanbul/Cappadocia
This morning, fly to Cappadocia, a UNESCO World Heritage site. This uniquely eroded volcanic moonscape is characterized by clusters of natural stone pillars and cones known as "fairy chimneys." Past civilizations left their mark here as well, carving homes and churches directly into the rock faces. Accompanied by your guide, explore this spectacular landscape on foot. Hike around marvelous rock formations and into caves, ancient churches, and underground cities in Göreme National Park. Settle into your boutique hotel, built within five cave formations overlooking Göreme and tucked within the rocky landscape.

Day 6 — Cappadocia
Today you may choose to survey the unusual landscape from a different perspective on an optional early morning hot-air balloon excursion. Then meet your guide and enter a fascinating web of tunnels and multi-level homes in the underground village of Kaymakli. This afternoon, visit the potters of Avanos, who have practiced their craft for at least 3,000 years.

Day 7 — Cappadocia/Izmir/Ephesus/Kusadasi
Fly to Izmir and travel overland to Roman Ephesus, once a great Ionian port, later a center of early Christianity, and still one of the best preserved classical cities in the eastern Mediterranean. Join your private guide for a visit to the local museum before exploring the ruins, from the delicate facade of the Library of Celsus to the site of the Temple of Artemis, one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. Continue to Kusadasi and check in to your hotel.

Day 8 — Kusadasi/Istanbul
Fly to Istanbul this morning and enjoy the afternoon to explore on your own. Conclude your Turkish journey with a relaxing cruise on the Bosporus.
