Norway's Fjords
Pre-Trip, 5 Days
Spend five days amid some of Norway's most breathtaking landscapes. Begin in Bergen, the "gateway to the fjords," and acquaint yourself with its modern-day vibrancy as well as the medieval beauty of its wharf district, Bryggen, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Then, follow pristine fjords as they carve through spectacular mountains laced with waterfalls. Ferry, sail, and drive deep into the fjordland, and take a ride on the famous Flaam Railway.Itinerary - 5 Days
Days 1 & 2 — Newark/Bergen, Norway
Depart Newark on an overnight flight to Copenhagen, Denmark, and connect to Bergen, a charming Hanseatic village in the heart of Norway's fjordland. Take an introductory drive through the city and visit Troldhaugen to see the home of musician Edward Grieg. Stop to examine the remarkable Fantoft Stave Church before returning to Bergen to check in to our hotel. Enjoy an afternoon at leisure before joining the group for a welcome dinner at the hotel.

Day 3 — Bergen
Take a morning walking tour of the Bryggen district, a UNESCO World Heritage site where medieval wooden houses line the picturesque wharf. Meander through Bergen's colorful fish and flower market, and visit the Hanseatic Museum and St. Mary's Church. Then ride a funicular up the mountainside for a panoramic vista of the city and its surrounding islets and fjords. After lunch in a local restaurant, enjoy the rest of the afternoon and evening at leisure.

Day 4 — Loftus
Depart Bergen this morning and trace the shores of Sor Fjord to a beautiful waterfall on the Fosselva River. Continue along Hardanger Fjord into a landscape of sheer slopes, waterfalls, and hills dotted with fruit orchards. Arrive in Kvanndal and board a ferry to cruise across the fjord to Utne. After visiting the museum, enjoy coffee and kraatekaker, a traditional Norwegian pastry. Ferry to Kisarvik and drive to Loftus, our home for the night.

Day 5 — Flaam/Oslo
This morning, follow the fjord as it snakes toward Brimnes. Take a ferry to Bruravik and Voss and stop to see the thundering Tvindefoss waterfall. Drive along Lake Oppheim and descend into the dramatic Stalheim canyon on the way to Gudvangen. From here, sail into Sogne Fjord, the longest and deepest in the world. Pass cascading waterfalls, isolated hamlets, and lush mountainsides. Arrive in Flaam in time for lunch. Then board the world-famous Flaam railway, which climbs more than 2,900 feet in less than an hour, and take in breathtaking views of Flaam valley. Change trains at Myrdal, and arrive in Oslo in the late evening.
