Extend Your Trip: Lake Nicaragua

Journey to Jicaro Island to immerse yourself in the unique culture and landscapes of Lake Nicaragua. Glide between tiny isletas by boat, as islanders have done for centuries; try your hand at fishing with traditional nets; and meet with schoolchildren to learn about daily life on the lake. Travel beyond the lakeshores to scale the lava-filled cone of the Masaya Volcano, trek through tropical forests and plantations, and bask in the Spanish colonial splendor of Granada.

Day 1—San Jose, Costa Rica/Jicaro Island, Nicaragua

Fly from San Jose to Managua, Nicaragua, and meet your private driver for the land and water transfer to Jicaro Island. Travel to Asese Port, and take in views of the mighty Mombacho Volcano as you cruise past the tiny isletas of Lake Nicaragua, home to centuries-old fishing communities. Upon arrival at Jicaro Island Lodge, a National Geographic Unique Lodge of the World, settle into your tree-house style casita, and then set out to explore the lake by paddleboard or kayak. Return to the lodge for a waterfront dinner featuring traditional Nicaraguan dishes.

Climb the bell tower of the Iglesia La Merced for views over the central plaza, and then return to Jicaro for lunch. This afternoon, go on a behind-the-scenes tour of the lodge’s sustainability projects. Then board a fishing boat and try your hand at catching tilapia using traditional nets. This evening, enjoy dinner on a floating dock, where wait staff deliver your meal by boat.

See community development projects sponsored by your lodge, including infrastructure that brings safe drinking water and electricity to the island. Return to Jicaro for lunch and some lakeside relaxation. Journey to the mainland at sunset and join a guide in climbing the cone of the active Masaya Volcano to peer into its lava-filled crater.
