Extend Your Trip: Bazaruto Archipelago, Mozambique

Dive into the marine-rich waters and centuries-old fishing culture of the Mozambique Channel. Go on snorkeling and scuba excursions in waters inhabited by whale sharks and the elusive dugong; explore Benguerra Island’s swirling sand shoals and towering dunes on horseback and guided drives; and glide across turquoise waters on a paddleboard, sea kayak, or traditional dhow sailboat.

Day 1—Sabi Sabi Reserve, South Africa/Bazaruto Archipelago, Mozambique

Following your final game drive, fly to Vilankulo, Mozambique. Board a helicopter to andBeyond Benguerra Island, a National Geographic Unique Lodge of the World, and enjoy a fruity welcome drink as you settle into your thatched beachfront cabana. Go for a dip in your own saltwater plunge pool, swing in your daybed while gazing out over the ocean, or grab snorkeling equipment from the lodge and explore the colorful marine life of the shallow reefs just off the coast. Meet fellow travelers for happy hour at the oceanfront bar, built from a traditional dhow sailboat. Later, get a primer on island culture from your skipper as you glide across the bay on a dhow at sunset.

Day 2—Bazaruto Archipelago

This morning you’ll be treated to an experience exclusively for National Geographic travelers. Join a marine conservationist or expert guide on a boating excursion in search of the elusive dugong. Learn about conservation initiatives like the Dugong Emergency Protection Project, and snorkel or swim in waters inhabited by these rare creatures. This afternoon, saddle up on one of the lodge’s rescue horses for a riding excursion. Ride bareback in ocean shallows, or guide your steed inland along hidden horse tracks. Enjoy a lantern-lit meal at the water’s edge this evening.

Day 3—Bazaruto Archipelago

Set your own agenda today. Head out with a guide in search of some of the island’s 150 bird species—from unusual tropical species such as the paradise flycatcher and green pigeon to the flamingos that wade through inland lakes. Continue your island explorations on a guided drive to discover the lakes and dunes of the north, meet with locals in the main village, or venture to the island’s wild eastern end. Take a midday break and sink into a “castaway picnic,” delivered to one of the remote sand shoals that jut into Benguerra’s turquoise shallows. Later, trace the coast on a lodge paddle board or sea kayak.
