Southern Tanzania Safari

  • Trip Type: Journeys
  • 6 Days | Arusha to Dar Es Salaam
  • Group Size: Max 6

Trip Details

Get off the usual safari track for a whirlwind week of wildlife-viewing in the southern circuit of Tanzania. The reserves and national parks of this region are remote and much less frequented by travelers, offering exceptional exploration. Watch for its herds of elephants, towers of giraffes, and zeals of zebras on a safari experience that will feel like your group’s alone. Internal flights between parks are included to ensure you experience the most in the time available.

Trip Highlights

    • Set out on safari in two distinct game reserves to seek out Tanzania’s incredible wildlife, including lions, zebras, giraffes, and African wild dogs.
    • Discuss the importance of wildlife conservation with rangers in Ruaha National Park.
    • Embark on a river safari through Selous Game Reserve to spot wading hippos, elephants, and more.

Itinerary - 6 Days

Day 1 — Arusha

Arrive at any time. Arrival transfer is included.

Day 2 — Arusha/Ruaha National Park

This morning catch a flight to Ruaha National Park, Tanzania’s largest national park, which harbors an abundance of wildlife and vast, diverse landscapes. Transfer to our safari lodge and embark on a safari drive to spot local wildlife. (1B, 1L, 1D)

Day 3 — Ruaha National Park

Spend a full day viewing wildlife with our expert safari guide inside this vast and remote park, keeping an eye out for lions, buffalo, zebras, giraffes, and impalas. This evening, relax at the lodge, sitting on the deck with a cool drink, listening to the night sounds, and gazing at the stars. (1B, 1L, 1D)

Day 4 — Ruaha National Park/Selous

Enjoy one last morning safari drive in Ruaha before catching our flight to Selous Game Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage site. After settling into our camp, board a boat on the river for an evening safari. The rivers of Selous are the lifeblood of the park, attracting elephants, hippos, and crocodiles, among others. (1B, 1L, 1D)

Day 5 — Selous Game Reserve

Rise early and head out for a full day wildlife safari drive in this incredible reserve, accompanied by our local guide. The park is known for its numerous lion prides, over 50 percent of the remaining endangered African wild dog population, and over 400 bird species. There also is an abundance of zebra, impala, giraffe, sable, kudu, baboon, wildebeest, colobus, and vervet monkeys. After a busy day, relax this evening, enjoying sunset by the river and dinner in the boma. (1B, 1L, 1D)

Day 6 — Selous/Dar es Salaam

Enjoy a morning safari walk before catching a flight to Dar Es Salaam. After arriving in Dar Es Salaam, depart at any time. (1B, 1L)
