The culture of the Berbers in northern Africa dates back as many as 5,000 years. Come discover their world on this 15-day experience through the most incredible cultural highlights Morocco has to offer. Explore the souks and streets of Marrakech and Fez; spend a night in a comfortable, tented camp; enjoy dinner with a traditional Berber family; and unwind in the coastal beauty of Essaouira. Come to Morocco and return home with a new understanding of this unique part of the world.

Trip Highlights

    • Explore no fewer than seven UNESCO World Heritage sites, including the medinas of Fez and Marrakech and the adobe village of Aït Ben Haddou.
    • Sleep among the Saharan dunes in a traditional tent and explore the Anti-Atlas Mountains.
    • Try your hand at Arabic calligraphy with a local master in Fez.

Itinerary - 15 Days

Day 1 — Casablanca

Arrive at any time. Arrival transfer included. Enjoy a welcome dinner. (1D)

Day 2 — Meknès/Volubilis/Fez

Enjoy a guided tour of the imperial city of Meknès. Continue to the ruins of Volubilis, one of the best-preserved Roman ruins in Morocco, then on to Fez for the night. (1B, 1L)

Day 3 — Fez

Step back in time on a walking tour of the UNESCO World Heritage–rated Fez medina. Explore its winding lanes and alleys with a knowledgeable guide. Later, visit a local café for a class on Islamic calligraphy. (1B)

Days 4 & 5 — Marrakech

Travel to Marrakech to experience its color and chaos firsthand. Watch storytellers and acrobats while enjoying a simple and delicious meal at a market food stall. The next day, set out for a guided tour of this incredible city, including the Bahia Palace and Saadian Tombs. Visit the medina with a city resident who will discuss spices and herbs. Then head to a traditional Berber house to enjoy a cooking class and an incredible dinner together. (2B, 2D)

Day 6 — Aït Ben Haddou

Travel to Aït Ben Haddou, a World Heritage site in the Atlas Mountains, and explore this ancient adobe village. (1B, 1D)

Day 7 — Erg Chigaga

Travel through the Drâa Valley to Zagora and set off on 4x4s into the desert. Stop at Tamegroute to visit the library of ancient Islamic texts. Continue off-road toward the great dunes of Erg Chigaga to our comfortable desert camp. Opt to take a camel ride or climb to the top of the dunes for views of the vast Sahara. Enjoy a traditional dinner under the stars. (1B, 1L, 1D)

Day 8 — Zagora

Cross the desert back to Zagora. Enjoy a talk on the history of the Drâa region and visit nearby historical sites. (1B)

Day 9 — Taroudant

Head toward the Anti-Atlas region to the carpet towns of Tazenakht and Taliouine, where saffron is harvested. In Taroudant, visit the famed leather tanneries and local markets. (1B)

Days 10 & 11 — Tafraout

Enter the Anti-Atlas region to view natural rock formations and explore the Tafraout town center and local markets. The following day, visit Aït Mansour Gorge, the Painted Rocks, and the Chapeau de Napoleon. Walk through a palm oasis and have lunch in a village house. Visit a women’s cooperative that produces handicrafts and argan oil. (2B, 1L)

Days 12 & 13 — Essaouira

Travel toward the Atlantic coast to the port town of Essaouira. Head down to the port to see the fishing fleet unload their catch. Pick out the best of the bunch, which we’ll take to a nearby restaurant to cook up for our lunch. Opt to visit a hammam (traditional spa and steam baths), stroll the beach, visit shops and galleries, or go surfing or sailing. (2B, 1L)

Days 14 & 15 — Marrakech

Return to Marrakech and visit the Menara Gardens and the Majorelle Gardens. Enjoy an optional farewell dinner at a palace-style restaurant with folkloric entertainment. The next day, depart at any time. (2B)

Cost Details

All trip prices are per person based on double occupancy. If you're traveling on your own, we'll pair you up with a roommate of the same gender so that you can pay the same rate as other travelers. Prices are subject to change without notice and do not include airfare. All prices and fares are quoted in U.S. dollars.
