Itinerary - 9 Days
Day 1 — San José
Arrive at any time. Arrival transfer is included. Those arriving early may wish to explore downtown San José, discovering its lively plazas and colonial architecture.
Days 2 & 3 — La Fortuna/Arenal
Visit a G Adventures–supported coffee co-op for lunch and a tour. Continue on to La Fortuna to visit a local home and learn the art of tortilla-making from the family. Then sit down with them to a dinner of casado, a typical Costa Rican dish of black beans, plantains, and tortillas. The next day, take advantage of free time to explore La Fortuna—the adventure hub of Costa Rica. Optional activities include canyoneering, canopy walks, and a boat tour of the wetlands in the Cano Negro Wildlife Refuge. (2B, 1L, 1D)
Days 4 & 5 — Monteverde
Travel to Monteverde and enjoy a guided nature hike in the Santa Elena Cloud Forest Reserve, where you can opt to visit a butterfly garden, ride a zip line through the canopy, or go horseback riding. Visit the Monteverde Institute, which has served as the base for numerous National Geographic–funded explorers and scientists studying the cloud forest. Meet some of the researchers and learn about the various projects examining insects and birds, as well as tropical reforestation and conservation. (2B)
Day 6 — Manuel Antonio
Continue to Manuel Antonio on the stunning Pacific coast. Enjoy the laid-back atmosphere of the area with options to take a surfing lesson, go horseback riding through tropical forests, take a catamaran cruise, or visit other nearby beaches. (1B)
Day 7 — Manuel Antonio
Take a guided walk in Manuel Antonio National Park, famed for its stunning beaches and abundant wildlife, including monkeys, armadillos, sloths, and some 350 species of birds. Swim or snorkel in the park’s pristine coastal waters, and then hike the trails that wind through the inland tropical forests. (1B)
Day 8 — San José
Return to San José and enjoy an optional farewell dinner in town. (1B)
