Home to volcanoes, lush rain forests, beaches, and unique wildlife, Costa Rica is a celebrated pioneer in protecting natural heritage. Forge your own path through this gorgeous country over nine days of outstanding adventure. Trek across the foot of a volcano to photograph electric blue butterflies, visit a coffee co-op, and search for monkeys while hiking park trails. Get in touch with nature’s best in Costa Rica.

Trip Highlights

    • Visit the Monteverde Institute, a research center supported by National Geographic, and assist in cloud forest conservation.
    • Tour a G Adventures–supported coffee co-op whose proceeds benefit the local community.
    • Cook up traditional Costa Rican dishes in the home of a local family, and then sit down to dinner with them.

Itinerary - 9 Days

Day 1 — San José

Arrive at any time. Arrival transfer is included. Those arriving early may wish to explore downtown San José, discovering its lively plazas and colonial architecture.

Days 2 & 3 — La Fortuna/Arenal

Visit a G Adventures–supported coffee co-op for lunch and a tour. Continue on to La Fortuna to visit a local home and learn the art of tortilla-making from the family. Then sit down with them to a dinner of casado, a typical Costa Rican dish of black beans, plantains, and tortillas. The next day, take advantage of free time to explore La Fortuna—the adventure hub of Costa Rica. Optional activities include canyoneering, canopy walks, and a boat tour of the wetlands in the Cano Negro Wildlife Refuge. (2B, 1L, 1D)

Days 4 & 5 — Monteverde

Travel to Monteverde and enjoy a guided nature hike in the Santa Elena Cloud Forest Reserve, where you can opt to visit a butterfly garden, ride a zip line through the canopy, or go horseback riding. Visit the Monteverde Institute, which has served as the base for numerous National Geographic–funded explorers and scientists studying the cloud forest. Meet some of the researchers and learn about the various projects examining insects and birds, as well as tropical reforestation and conservation. (2B)

Continue to Manuel Antonio on the stunning Pacific coast. Enjoy the laid-back atmosphere of the area with options to take a surfing lesson, go horseback riding through tropical forests, take a catamaran cruise, or visit other nearby beaches. (1B)
