Trip Details

From the tranquil wineries of the Maipo Valley and the green landscapes of northern Patagonia to the steamy tango joints of Buenos Aires, this nine-day adventure offers a window into the diversity of South America. Hike through Chile's Lake District, take one of the world’s most scenic ferry cruises, and sample the region's outstanding wines—included flights mean we can cover a lot of ground. Find a great adventure in the extreme south.

Trip Highlights

    • Sample vintages at a winery in Chile’s scenic Maipo Valley, and learn about local wines from a certified enologist.
    • Skim turquoise waters framed by snowcapped peaks on a cruise in Chile’s Lake District.
    • Help prepare a lunch of Chilean specialties at a family home in the charming lakeside town of Puerto Varas.
    • Enjoy an optional dinner with a tango performance in Buenos Aires.

Itinerary - 9 Days

Day 1 — Santiago

Arrive at any time. Arrival transfer is included.

Day 2 — Santiago

Visit a winery in the stunning Maipo Valley, and learn about the wine-making process from a certified wine expert. Stroll the vineyards with your guide. Then sample various wines and enjoy a vertical tasting, trying one wine at various stages of the process, from different barrels, to experience the evolution of the wine for ourselves. (1B)

Days 3 & 4 — Puerto Varas

Fly southward and transfer to scenic Puerto Varas in the stunning Chilean Lake District. Enjoy views of Osorno Volcano while exploring the Angelmó fish market. Then join a family for dinner in their home, where you’ll help cook up local specialties. The next day, opt to take an excursion to Chiloé Island, home to a traditional seafaring community. Discover the island’s stilted houses and historical churches, and enjoy a fresh seafood lunch. Cap off your excursion with a viewing of the island’s massive penguin colonies. (2B, 1L)

Days 5 & 6 — Bariloche

Travel by bus and ferry to San Carlos de Bariloche, Argentina. View the mighty Petrohué Falls, and then board the Cruce de Lagos for what is considered one of the world’s most scenic ferry rides. We’ll cruise across turquoise waters while taking in magnificent views of lakeside volcanoes. The next day, enjoy free time to explore this stunning region. Opt to hike, stroll the town, or take a boat excursion to the charming village of Puerto Blest. (2B)

Days 7 & 8 — Buenos Aires

Fly to Buenos Aires and spend the evening enjoying a night out with a light dinner in a local cafe before heading to a popular dance venue where we'll enjoy a lesson from local dancers. Opt to stay for Milonga, a neighborhood tradition where students and teachers of the venue show up to practice. The next day, enjoy a city tour of the "Paris of the Americas," visiting key sights and neighborhoods including Plaza de Mayo, La Boca, and the famed Recoleta Cemetery. When you are done exploring, rest your weary feet and enjoy a drink in one of the many sidewalk cafes and restaurants. (2B, 1D)

Day 9 — Buenos Aires

Depart at any time. (1B)
