Experience Iceland’s magnificent landscapes from a unique viewpoint during this three-day, post-voyage extension. Step into the ice tunnels inside Langjökull, Iceland’s second largest glacier, and go deep underground to see the brilliant blue ice that’s formed over centuries. Then take a scenic helicopter ride to two different glaciers, soaring above the mountains, and enjoy a rare opportunity to traverse crackling glacial landscapes on foot. Cap off the adventure by unwinding in soothing hot springs.
DAY 1: Disembark our ship and drive inland to Iceland’s southwestern region of Húsafell, a pristine, forested area known for its rushing rivers, lava formations, and glaciers. Our first stop is Cave Víðgelmir, the mightiest of Iceland’s lava tubes. Put on a hard hat and walk down into the interior of the cave, which features amazing colors and unique lava formations that our local guide will explain along the way. After lunch, make our way to the Klaki basecamp on Langjökull Glacier—Iceland’s second largest glacial cap. Drive onto the glacier in a specially outfitted jeep, arriving at the entrance of a human-made ice cave. Walk deep inside the Langjökull ice tunnel and discover the blue ice, crevasses, and spectacular icicles from inside. End the day with a delicious dinner at our hotel. Hotel Húsafell (L,D)
DAY 2: After breakfast, a helicopter awaits us outside the hotel for a thrilling day of heli-hiking. Depart Húsafell and enjoy a 30-minute scenic flight as we make our way towards Kerlingarfjöll, a mountainous geothermal area. We’ll be dropped off for a two-hour hike amidst steaming geothermal vents, melting ice packs, and twisting rivers. Enjoy a picnic lunch against this stunning natural backdrop. Later, fly towards Iceland’s southern coastline, taking in aerial views of thundering waterfalls and majestic mountain ranges en route. Our afternoon destination is Mýrdalsjökull glacier, where we’ll strap on crampons and walk up the glacier to an impressive ice fall. Our helicopter will be on standby to pick us up and return us to our hotel in time to enjoy the onsite hot springs before dinner. Hotel Húsafell (B,L,D)
DAY 2: Enjoy a final leisurely morning at our hotel. After breakfast, drive back to Reykjavík, stopping along the way at Trollafoss, or “Troll waterfalls,” so named because the rock formations resemble the face of a troll when water flows over them. Upon arrival in Reykjavík, enjoy lunch at a local restaurant before transferring to the airport for your flight home. (L,D)
