Post-Trip, 4 Days

Extend your time in East Africa on safari in Kenya’s Masai Mara National Reserve. Spend three nights at a luxurious canvas tented camp situated on the banks of the Mara River. Explore this exciting area renowned for its dense population of big cats, and be on the lookout for the "Big Five."

Itinerary - 4 Days

Day 1 — Serengeti/Masai Mara

This is Day 10 of the main itinerary.
This morning fly from the Serengeti in Tanzania to the Masai Mara in Kenya. Meet your driver and transfer to the luxury Governors’ Camp. The views across the rolling golden grasslands studded with acacia trees, rivers and forests are dazzling, and the sense of space overwhelming. After lunch, set out on your first Kenyan safari adventure, keeping an eye out for the extraordinary population of lions and zebras.

Days 2 & 3 — Masai Mara National Park

Enjoy two full days of safari drives in the Masai Mara National Reserve. Look for the “Big Five”— rhino, lion, leopard, elephant, and cape buffalo—in this beautiful area. Spend time exploring the winding banks of the Mara River teeming with bird life, hippos and Nile crocodiles.

Days 4 & 5 — Masai Mara/Nairobi/U.S.

Enjoy a final morning safari drive. This afternoon, fly from the Masai Mara to Nairobi’s Wilson Airport. Upon arrival transfer to a local restaurant for dinner before heading to the international airport for your flight home, arriving the following day.

Rwanda Gorilla Tracking

Post-Trip, 6 Days

Add an optional pre- or post-trip extension to Rwanda for a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to encounter endangered mountain gorillas in the wild. From our base at the spectacular Virunga Lodge, track gorillas and hike to the original site of National Geographic grantee Dian Fossey's Karisoke Research Center.

Itinerary - 6 Days

Day 1 — Tanzania/Kigali, Rwanda

This is Day 10 of the main itinerary. The Rwanda Gorilla Tracking extension is also available pre-trip. Please call for details.
Depart Tanzania on a flight to Kigali. Upon arrival, transfer to our hotel and enjoy an evening at leisure.

Day 2 — Kigali

Journey into the lush hills that surround Kigali on an excursion that traces Rwanda’s path from despair to hope. We visit a “reconciliation village” supported by the Millennium Villages project, a unique development approach conceived by Columbia University’s Earth Institute and the United Nations Development Project. Here, survivors and perpetrators live side by side in an effort to heal the wounds of the genocide and build a brighter future for Rwanda. Listen to the moving testimonies of both a perpetrator and a survivor, and discuss the challenges—and the promise—of former enemies living as one. Visit the village health center and the primary school, fruits of the Millennium Villages project. This afternoon, travel back to Kigali for dinner at the legendary Hotel des Mille Collines—featured in the movie Hotel Rwanda—where more than a thousand Rwandans found safe haven during the genocide.

Day 3 — Kigali/Parc National des Volcans

This morning, pay a visit to the Kigali Memorial Centre, where a poignant exhibition recalls Rwanda's mid-1990s genocide and testifies to the country's remarkable resilience. Then, travel north through the beautiful countryside to Parc National des Volcans. This afternoon, pay a visit to a local primary school.

Day 4 — Parc National des Volcans

Spend the day tracking mountain gorillas in the forested hills of Parc National des Volcans. Follow local guides through thick undergrowth and dangling vines in search of gorilla families. Once we find them, sit among these gentle giants, observing their interactions; listening to their distinctive grumbles; and viewing one of the planet’s most endangered creatures from an awe-inspiring, up close perspective.

Day 5 — Parc National des Volcans/Kigali

Trek to the original site of the Karisoke Research Center, where the late Dian Fossey, a National Geographic grantee, carried out mountain gorilla research for 18 years. Or strike out into the lower reaches of the park on the lookout for golden monkeys, a distinct species of primate that can often be found in thick bamboo stands. Or if you prefer, you may enjoy an optional second day of gorilla tracking in Parc National des Volcans for an additional cost. In the afternoon, head back to Kigali.

Days 6 & 7 — Kigali/Arusha

After breakfast, transfer to Kigali International Airport for your flight home, arriving the next day.

Zanzibar

Post-Trip, 4 Days

Discover a unique blend of Arabian architecture, Indian flavors, and lively Swahili culture on the "spice island." Explore picturesque Stone Town, a UNESCO World Heritage site; hike in jungles and spice plantations, and relax on palm-lined, white-sand beaches.

Day 1 — Arusha/Stone Town, Zanzibar

This is Day 10 of the main itinerary.
Fly from Arusha and to Zanzibar this afternoon. Settle into our hotel in Stone Town, Zanzibar's historic port town and a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Day 2 — Zanzibar

On a morning walking tour of Stone Town, visit the city market, the Old Slave Market site, and the National Museum of Zanzibar. Then discover cinnamon trees and cardamom plants at a spice plantation, or view red colobus monkeys on a walk through Jozani Forest. Later, cross the island to our lovely resort on one of the island's most pristine beaches.

Day 3 — Zanzibar

Enjoy a full day at leisure to relax at the beach, explore the coast, or swim and snorkel amid the reefs around the island. Tonight, gather for dinner by the sea.

Days 4 & 5 — Stone Town/Dar es Salaam/U.S.

After a leisurely morning at the beach, transfer to Stone Town to take a flight to Dar es Salaam. Connect with your flights home, arriving the next day. (B, L)
