In 2003, ornithologist Brent Stephenson spotted and photographed a seabird thought to be extinct for more than 150 years: the New Zealand storm petrel, known from only three specimen collected in the 1800s. With funding from National Geographic, Brent successfully caught and identified this bird. Brent has since earned his PhD and currently works on wildlife and conservation projects in his native New Zealand while continuing to research the storm petrel.
