Veteran staff writer Tom O'Neill spent more than 15 years covering Asia for National Geographic magazine. In subjects ranging from the Untouchables in India to the samurai in Japan, his writing has focused on the deep-rooted customs and beliefs that anchor the region as it rapidly opens to the outside world. For his article on the Mekong River, he traveled through Khmer Rouge-held territory to visit Angkor Wat in its early stages of renovation. And in Vietnam he joined American veterans as they returned to make peace with villages in the delta.
