Catch a flight to Armenia and immerse yourself in coffee culture, staying two nights at a traditional hacienda on a working coffee farm. Spend the afternoon with a coffee expert exploring natural elements that influence flavor and production and tasting various roasts. Drive to Medellín and visit Comuna 13, a community transformed into a shining example of Colombia’s progress in overcoming its notorious past. Meet a local guide and ride upward on the city’s unique public system of cable cars and escalators. Enjoy free time for some exploration. Optional excursions include a city tour, a visit to the colonial town of Santa Fe de Antioquia, and paragliding. (2B)
Catch a morning flight to Santa Marta and continue to our beach lodge near Tayrona National Park on the Caribbean coast. Enjoy fresh seafood and some unforgettable beach time on the white sand. The next day, head farther up the coast to the Guajira Peninsula to visit Los Flamencos Sanctuary and spot the vibrant American flamingo. Afterwards, visit a Riohacha community to meet the local people and shop at the Wayuu tribe market. (2B, 1L, 2D)
Drive to tropical Cartagena. Take a walking tour of the old city, and visit sites that inspired Nobel Prize–winning author Gabriel García Márquez. This evening, learn the basics of Colombian salsa in a private lesson with two local dancers. The next day, enjoy free time to visit Playa Blanca, take a boat tour to the Islas del Rosario, a protected archipelago of coral islands, or soak in an incredible mud volcano. (3B)
Fly back to Bogotá and opt to visit the Colombia National Museum, Gold Museum, or the Naval Museum of the Caribbean. Or just wander one of the city’s many quaint neighborhoods. (1B)
