National Geographic Expeditions
2009 Photo Contest Winners
This year, we received more than 650 entries and the competition was particularly stiff. Take a look at the top three prize-winning photos and 21 other finalists below.
Eric Kruszewski, Reisterstown, MD
Photography Expedition: India
Prize: Trip for two to Alaska's Inside Passage
Steady.... Steady Street performers sometimes line the path leading to Jaisalmer Fort's entrance. As tourists pass by, the locals encourage them to watch their family's special talents. One family is proud of their daughter's ability to traverse a tightrope in a rather unique fashion; she does it on her knees (with the assistance of a metal plate) and pushes herself along only with her toes. Under the cover of circling birds, with the fort illuminated in the early morning, this young girl performs her soaring, balancing act.
Sara Nichols, Fort Lauderdale, FL
Photography Workshop: San Miguel de Allende, Mexico
Prize, Honorable Mention: $500 Credit toward a National Geographic Expedition
Porcelain Doll I was completely captivated by the most beautiful innocence of this young girl. She was shy, yet very comfortable with the camera.
Barry Simon, New York, NY
Expedition: Wildlife of Tanzania and Rwanda
Prize, Honorable Mention: $500 Credit toward a National Geographic Expedition
Mother and Daughter Visiting the mountain gorillas of Rwanda was a unique and unforgettable experience. We were particularly privileged to make the acquaintance of this 10-day old baby and her mother. The look of love in this gorilla's eyes is one that any human mother would recognize.
